A nice rant on what’s wrong with federated searching from Meredith Farkas. Link: Federated searching and why users aren’t finding/using your electronic materials.
She’s thinking pretty much along the same lines as Marshall Breeding in his Feb 2005 Computers in Libraries piece, Plotting a new course for metasearch (direct link to Academic Search Premier). Pretty good thinking company, Meredith! 😉

Hey thanks for the compliment!!! I haven’t read that particular article, but it’s nice to be put in the same company as Breeding (I do like a lot of what he writes, and I wish I’d been at CIL to hear his talk yesterday). Your blog is great! I’ve become increasingly convinced that if I want to know anything about technology applications in libraries, I need look no further than Canadian academic libraries. A lot of my presentation is coming from from ideas I got from Canadian libraries and Canadian bloggers. Is there something in the water up there(?) because I don’t see as many interesting things coming out of American libraries.
Oooh, sounds like a challenge to all y’all south of the border! 😉 Y’know, I’ve kind of noticed a little slant to the north myself, and it is a little weird. I’m not sure why that is; obviously there are a lot of great techie librarian blogs down in the States too, but if you look at the size of the population in each country you’d think there would be a few more, wouldn’t you? You’re looking for a job these days? Why not look to Canada? 🙂
Glad you like my content – I just discovered your blog this week and I like it too.
