In a recent issue of The Readex Report, Benjamin L. Carp, Assistant Professor of History at Tufts University gives us five reasons why, despite his love for digitized resources, he still loves and wants libraries:
- Rare or unique archival materials
- Browsable stacks
- Knowledgeable, experienced librarians
- The buzz of studious patrons
- All the usual reasons to love libraries

I think in the long term we might need to find a way of digitally recreating the browsing experience. Typing in a keyword and going straight there doesn’t allow for much serendipity…
I agree with you 100% – has anyone seen any good examples of digital browsing?
“Completely unrelated, why is it knowledgeable but not browseable?” — strictly an intuitive answer, but the E is necessary in “knowledgeable” to signal the soft G. I know that any explanation relating English spelling to logic is suspect, but it sounds reasonable.
