CFP extended: Special Issue of Journal of Access Services

For a forthcoming double issue of the Journal of Access Services, a recent call for papers has been extended  until  May 15.  The theme is Best Practices in Access Services, and the full details are as follows:

The Journal of Access Services is currently accepting manuscripts for consideration of publication in a special issue on Best Practices in Access Services. Papers are sought on the following topics, but are not limited to:

โ€ข    telephone-based circulation transactions (renewal, notification, etc.)
โ€ข    unique payment options (PayPal, declining balance, volunteering)
โ€ข    drive-through library service
โ€ข    mini book trucks for patron use
โ€ข    kiosks
โ€ข    shelving activities of student workers
โ€ข    printing & photocopying solutions
โ€ข    student/staff training
โ€ข    student scheduling
โ€ข    motivating staff (in general or on special projects)
โ€ข    combined service point (circulation & reference)
โ€ข    retrieval services
โ€ข    mentoring Access Services librarians
โ€ข    shelving reserve items (owned vs. instructor copies used in multiple classes)
โ€ข    DVD and other equipment management
โ€ข    study facilities
โ€ข    security
โ€ข    laptop checkout
โ€ข    storageโ€”digitization, automated retrieval, processing, cooperative collection management
โ€ข    patron privacy
โ€ข    using LibQual+ data to improve services
โ€ข    E-Reserves administration/copyright issues
โ€ข    use of โ€œSocial Softwareโ€ to communicate internally or externally (Blogs, RSS, Wikis, social networking software)

  1. Hi Paul,
    If you could give an example of what a “best practices” article would look like, those of us who would be interested in writing something, but are intimidated by the standard to which we need to meet, would have a better idea of what you’re looking for. For me, I have to admit that I’d like to write something but I don’t really understand what is meant by an article on best practices. When I think best practices, I think writing a policy not a journal article.
    Also, I’ve now received my second issue and I’m glad I’m subscribing ๐Ÿ™‚

Laurie, you should probably go right to the editors of the issue with a brief proposal outlining what you’d like to write about, but I’d say 8-10 pages describing something that you’ve done that works well at your institution. Preferably something that others would both find interesting/useful AND might be able to emulate.
