Typepad Shutdown Announcement
Yikes! I can't say I'm surprised, but I just received the following email from Typepad support (this blog is hosted on Typepad): We want to inform you that we have made the difficult decision to discontinue Typepad, effective September 30, 2025. What Does This Mean for You? After September 30, 2025, access to Typepad –…

Bluesky Mapping Canadian Skeets
Over on Maps Mania, Keir posted a couple of quick maps he built leveraging Bluesky's firehose jetstream, including US State Social, which: scans Bluesky posts for mentions of the 50 US states. When it detects a mention, it adds a marker to the map and displays the associated message in the map’s sidebar. Once the…

The Sisyphean Cycle of Technology Panics
I just finished Amy Orben's excellent article, The Sisyphean Cycle of Technology Panics, and recommend it. I thought it was going to be simply an acknowledgement and catalogue of the fact that yes, we have seen this before, with radio, comics, TV, video games, etc., and while it does include that, it does an excellent…

If it’s worth sharing, it’s worth saving – Wayback to Facebook
I don't know why this particular solution didn't initially resonate with me, other than my doggedly wanting to link to THE ORIGINAL source, but with the recent demise of my locally-hosted instance of ShareNews, I've been searching for other ways to circumvent Facebook's ban on sharing news sites. I discovered a couple of solid commercial…

Some personal 2023 statistics
Not quite as intimate as Brian's, but according to the sites with whom I share my info, I read 37 books with 13,262 pages last year, and I cycled and ran 5,689 kms (3,535 miles), not including my e-bike commutes. I plan for 2024 to be significantly bigger on the cycling front, so stay tuned.…

Have you trained an AI?
Thanks to Mita Williams for pointing to this Washington Post article that makes it trivial to search and see whether any sites you're affiliated with have been used to train "Google’s C4 data set, a massive snapshot of the contents of 15 million websites that have been used to instruct some high-profile English-language AIs, called…

Hydrator is dead. Thanks for nothing, Elno
Ed Summers reports on the GitHub repository for Hydrator that, Twitter's changes to their API which greatly reduce the amount of read-only access means that the Hydrator is no longer a useful application. The application keys, which functioned for the last 7 years, have been rescinded by Twitter. Today sucks 🙁

Over at ResearchBuzz, Tara has had a busy summer learning JavaScript in order to satisfy her cravings for simple search tools that only exist in her head. tl;dr papers rolls into Elicit?
Early this year, there was some buzz about a new site called tl;dr papers, which claimed to "use machine learning to summarize arguments in scientific papers so that even a seven-year-old could understand them". From the moment I tried to visit the site it was down, so I put a watch on it, hoping to…
