Another week, another online screen recording program; this time it's Screenr. Amit
at Digital
Inspiration has a post comparing this newcomer to Screen
Toaster, Screen Jelly and Screencast-o-matic. While he uses a
narrative style, I'd prefer a chart, so I put one together:
| Tool | Duration | Dimensions | Webcam /Mic |
Video Format |
Quality | YouTube HD |
Mobile? |
| Screenr | 5 mins | user selected | mic | MP4 | Amit's examples |
yes | iPhone native |
| Screen Toaster |
< 20MB | user selected | mic + webcam | MOV, SWF | Amit's examples |
yes | Flash |
| Screen Jelly |
3 mins | entire screen | mic | can't down- load? |
Amit's examples |
no | Flash |
| Screencast-o-matic | 15 mins | user selected | mic | MP4, FLV, WMV | Amit's examples |
yes | Flash |

This is a great comparison chart. Thanks for reviewing and creating. I’ve been pretty happy with Screentoaster, but I always enjoy hearing about new products!
Nice comparison list. what about adding http://screencastle.com/
What about the free Auto-Screen-Recorder from Wisdom Soft? Look: http://www.wisdom-soft.com/asr/index.htm
The JingProject.com is free from TechSmith and has cross-platform capabilities. I like being able to create a screencast OR just a screen capture with the tool. It has a 5-minute limit like some of the others. Upgrade at $15/yr so you can create MP4’s. And, Jing automatically copies the URL to your clipboard while it’s uploading to Screencast.com
I like the fact that it automatically stores your video in your free Screencast.com account. Screencast.com is a very reasonable service if you’re producing a lot of screencasts.
It’s hard to argue with Screenr’s free MP4 capabilities though. I like it because this makes it iPhone accessible. However, all your videos are PUBLIC unless you download and delete them.
Either way, both Jing & Screenr provide a great free service.
