Google Unveils Cellphone Version of Digital-Book Collection

As reported in the Chronicle of Higher Education, Google has just made 1.5 million of their scanned books and made them available in a format suitable for reading on mobile devices.  Oddly, at this moment getting there is not an option from their official iPhone app, nor does visiting http://books.google.com on the iPhone automatically redirect to http://books.google.com/googlebooks/mobile/.  Here are some screen shots for you:

  1. Other things related to books on mobile devices:
Safari (O’Reilly’s subscription library) also released a mobile version, they demo-ed it for a day of free use during TOC (I happened to catch it via Tim O’Reilly’s tweet): http://toc.oreilly.com/2009/02/safari-books-online-goes-mobil.html
Have you seen Stanza for the iPhone (http://www.lexcycle.com/) – it looks like mostly public domain works, but an interesting idea.

  2. Hmm, I’ll have to check out the Safari interface – the University has a subscription to Safari, so that could be quite useful, thanks! Yeah, Stanza looks good, but I want to be able to read more current stuff…
