Yesterday I mentioned that we were going to introduce Google Scholar (aka Schoogle) to our EZProxy authentication server to see if our distance students could then gain access to resources we’ve licensed, and I’m happy to report that it works like a charm! I logged in from home and was able to gain access to the full text of everything I could when I was on campus.
Next step: get the students to use the EZProxy version of Schoogle.

This is an interesting idea – and thanks for sharing it. I think that GS can help to create more awareness about scholarly content. I am concerned that when we start to legitimize it as the gateway or front door to our scholarly content that we send a message to our students that it is now acceptable to use Google exclusively – or just much more than our other library databases. I continue to believe that we need to do a better job of integrating the higher quality library database content into the curriculum – with faculty helping to direct students to it. I think we know that our students could probably do a much better job on their research when they use the great tools provided within our library databases – compared to what one can do on GS – which from my experimentation does find some articles – but misses lots more.
