Meebo Widgets – Trouble in Paradise

So I’ve recently noticed that our Meebo Widgets are not correctly showing our status for our reference service; they almost always display that we’re offline even when we’re logged in.  Looks from the support forums like we’re not the only ones, and it’s frustrating that nobody from Meebo is chiming in to offer a solution.  Jocelyn, a librarian from Arizona Western, does suggest that if you enter your meebo room (first contact on your list), then the widgets may display your status correctly.  Worth a try – I was unable to even connect to our Room when I tried it at the end of my shift yesterday…

Sad MeeboMeebo Room

Anybody else having this problem, or found a solution?

  1. We’re having the same issues as well. Whenever it happens, I check everything to make sure that we’re logged in properly, so I know it’s on Meebo’s end of things. Routine maintenance? They’ve had a lot of growth in a short amount of time and I’ve wondered whether it’s been caused by that. It seems to go back up within a day, however.
I too am frustrated by the lack of response on their forums. I did, however, get a nice email back from someone within a day after I wrote about a different issue (automatically hyperlinked URLs in MeeboMe) so I now have an email to a real live person there. I will probably write her again this week to ask her about this problem.

  2. Paul, we’ve had the same problem and haven’t found a solution either.
I have noticed, however, that if I type a message in the Meebo widget even though it says I’m offline, it will often go through. We’ve added a message that patrons should try sending a message even though it says we’re offline, if it’s during regular reference hours when we should be online.

  3. I was talking with Chad Boeninger about this issue today and he suggested delays on the Meebo servers could explain this, and that certainly sounds plausible – they may be a victim of their own success! Doesn’t make it hurt any less 🙁
