Run Meebo in Firefox Sidebar

Lots of libraries seem to be using Meebo or MeeboMe to collect IM requests from multiple clients (AOL, MSN, Yahoo!, GTalk).  Up until today I used Trillian to manage all my accounts.  While Meebo works just fine, I didn’t like the fact that I had to have a web page open in order to see the chat requests come in.  Well taking a lead from Amit at Digital Inspiration who showed how easy it is to run Google Talk as a sidebar in Firefox, I thought I’d see if the same thing could be done for Meebo, and it can!

The steps are identical; we’ll just swap out a couple things in Amit’s explanation:

To add Meebo to your Firefox sidebar, bookmark the following URL (right-click and choose Bookmark this link):  http://wwwl.meebo.com/index-en.html

Now go to your Bookmarks menu, navigate to the above bookmark, right click and choose Properties. Tick the checkbox that says Load this bookmark in the sidebar.

MeeboBookmark

Whenever you choose that bookmark (why not put it in your bookmark toolbar?) it will now open as a sidebar in your browser, and thus will always be visible.

MeeboSidebar

So now I can browse away in Firefox, but Meebo follows along in a
sidebar.  Going to take a little while to get used to my slightly
reduced screen space, but I think I can handle it.

Thanks for the inspiration, Amit!

  4. Brilliant thankyou! Having to always navigate back to the page was frustrating, and in addition Trillian stopped logging in for me this week! This couldn’t have come at a better time for me.

  5. This is fabulous…thank you!

  6. Run Meebo in Firefox Sidebar

Sometimes it’s the little things! Here’s a tip that might make your IM life easier, especially if you’re tired of juggling browser windows between Meebo and elsewhere: you can view Meebo in a Firefox sidebar. You may miss the flashing

  7. Paul – thanks for this great tip. It’ll come in handy. Darlene

  8. This is great if I want to lose 20% of my page but I just don’t use it enough. What I would like is something to ring or ding or dong (ok maybe not dong) when I have an incoming IM in my FF tab. I can have 6-8 tabs open and when someone starts talking to me in the meebo tab…the top of the tab just blinks…many times I have not sen it flickering until 5-10 minutes later. All of the other IM let you know when someone is talking to you and meebo only does IF you are engaged directly on that page…
    Any ideas?

  9. Hi Paul, as we both realized, Meebo does chime when a new chat it initiated – just gotta remember to turn up the volume 🙂 Anyone know if this is a new-ish feature? I don’t remember it happening in times past…

  10. Thanks for this.
Will mention about this in an update to the following post :

  12. Run Meebo in a sidebar

Today in Firefox Evangelism I want to finish up by thinking running Meebo (previous write up on Meebo) in a sidebar.
Why would you want to do this?
    1.  You can do other things on the web (like Bible Gateway) while chatting.
    2. Running Meebo will keep …

  13. Libraries should also try http://imo.im.
It is really easy to use and is a great service!
