SnagIt for the Mac?

Techsmith continues to impress, this time throwing out a survey asking how many folks would be interested in seeing a version of SnagIt, their screen capture software, for the Mac.  I love SnagIt on the PC – super fast screen capture (my chosen part of the screen) plus the ability to immediately annotate with highlights, text, arrows, etc.  I use it pretty much every day when responding to students via email.  Anyhoo, here’s the info on the short survey:

Boy, we’ve received a lot of requests for a Mac version of SnagIt lately.  I’m looking for your input on this as a product concept.  I’ve put together a short 6 question survey that will go a long way towards helping us better understand how we might tackle this opportunity.

By the way, if you aren’t necessarily a Mac user but know someone that is who has always wanted SnagIt, please pass this survey link along to them.

In the interests of full disclosure, I was given my copy of SnagIt by Techsmith – it came along with the copy of Camtasia Studio.  Once I started using it I stopped using another piece of screen capture software I had paid for out of my own pocket; SnagIt was that much easier, faster, and useful.  I did do some searching for screen capture software for the mac a couple months ago, but didn’t come up with anything that would allow me to quickly annotate my screen grabs – is anyone out there aware of something that already does this?

  1. I’m a recent convert back to mac (actually i was mac person for 10 years, then in wintel hell for 10), and I miss Snagit every day! The crappy screen grab program that comes with the mac saves in TIFF, which is not so useful when doing poweroints or grabbing images for your blog.
    please please please!!!!

  2. Hmm, wonder if that can be changed somehow, or if it’s different by default on the Macbook than an older machine (just guessing); my screengrabs save as PNG files (using Apple+Shift+4 to save to the desktop, add the Ctrl key to save to clipboard)

  3. Here’s how I changed my Mac to save as PDF:
    Open up Terminal and type:
    defaults write com.apple.screencapture type pdf
hit enter after you have that typed in and quit Terminal
    Logout and log back in.
Here’s some helpful shortcuts for taking Mac screen captures:

I’m new to Mac and use Snagit on the PC, but while, if, they develop a Mac version what’s a good alternative (on the Mac).
    Cheers

  5. Steve, I use OmniDazzle with the cutout plugin. It’s a little backwards from Snag-it in that you highlight what you want to show and then do a screen capture (if I’m going to paste something in to email or a document, the screen capture is Apple+Shift+Ctrl+4 — drop the Ctrl key if you want to save to desktop. Not nearly as robust as Snag-it, but it gets the job done for me. Here’s an example of what it looks like. You can modify the frame colour and level of background transparancy…

  6. I’m a mac man. My bottom line is this, i only have parallels running WXP because of your software applications. We mac users can get creative enough to use apps like snag it, camstasia, etc. and integrate it with our phenomenal mac apps. It’s to bad most PC software companies do not adapt your “How To Build A Software App” concept. Sway over, i am positive there are thousands of MAC users waiting for your cross over! Mac users have an edge PC users can never take away!…it’s ok, common…we’re waiting… : )

  7. Hello Paul,
We have just set up a new page where we will try to cover some rumors we have heard about Snagit on Mac:
