At the beginning of the month I mentioned a keynote called Social Networking in the Academy. During the Q&A session someone asked if it was possible to limit how much of your profile is shown to different "levels" of friends, and I didn't think it was. But my colleague Jennifer figured out that you can create multiple groups for your friends, and then specify what each group can actually see. So now if you wanted to friend students (or whoever) but not let them see your full profile, you can do that.
