Thunderbird/SnagIt missing image

I’m sending this question to TechSmith technical support as well, but in case it’s more of a Thunderbird issue than a SnagIt issue I thought I’d try the lazy web too.  I’m using Thunderbird 1.5 and SnagIt 8.2.  I can easily grab a screenshot in SnagIt and paste it into an email, but when I try to paste a second image, I get this little red error box, and have to save the email to drafts, close, then re-open it in order to be able to paste the next image in.  Sometimes I can do two or possibly even three images in a row (I think), but if I’m doing multiple images, I can pretty much always expect to run in to this.  It really slows me down, and if there’s a way to fix it I’d love to know – anyone have any ideas?

  1. I thought I would be a little helpful and tell you that you are using the email function inside of SnagIt. It does NOT work with anything other than Outlook or Outlook Express. There’s no if’s and’s or butt’s. It just doesn’t work with opensource software.
    Sorry….

  2. Thanks Jim, I’m just using the Copy All, then pasting in to Thunderbird – that works great, when it works. Didn’t even know there was integration with Outlook – never touch that stuff 😉

  3. Hi there; I’m one of the developers on SnagIt. We ran across our post and I thought I’d chip in.
First off, our “Send Email” feature does, of course, work with Thunderbird, not just Outlook/Outlook Express. In fact, it works with any “MAPI” compliant email program, which is pretty much any desktop email program worth its salt. What it doesn’t do, though, is ‘inline’ the image- it instead attaches it to the email. So Jim- if it isn’t working for you, let us know! Hopefully the gang over in Tech Support can figure out what’s gone awry.
But Paul, as you note, you’re not using that feature, you’re just trying to copy/paste into the email.
So, to figure out whether this is a SnagIt issue or a Thunderbird issue, try pasting in images from another app, like Paint. Or, select some window, and hit “Alt+PrintScreen” to put a screenshot of just that window on your clipboard (this is a built-in windows function, not involving SnagIt), and then do a bunch of pastes in Thunderbird.
If pasting screenshots taken without SnagIt works flawlessly in thunderbird, then it sounds like our problem! If not, then it seems like a safe bet that tbird is the culprit.

  4. Thanks Paul, I think you might be right. Of course the first time I made a concerted effort to replicate the problem I couldn’t do it, but today it happened again, and I couldn’t paste clipboard info from any application into Tbird, so that does indeed seem to be the weak link. Haven’t been able to find any useful info in their support pages, but at least now I know where to focus my searches.

  5. Just composed an extensive email to a student that contained 8 screen caps and they all stuck as they were supposed to – keeping my fingers crossed that the recent upgrade to Thunderbird v2 might have fixed this annoying glitch!
